LECTURE

Task 3 – Development and Design

Timeframe: Weeks 6-7 (Deadline: Week 7)

In Task 3, we are required to create a design based on the ideas presented in the previous task. We need to apply the design principles we have learned during the conceptualization and development phases until the final design is completed.

Of the three options presented in Task 2, we are required to choose one sketch and refine it through color exploration, composition, and placement. The following are the format requirements for the final design submission:

A4 size

JPEG format, 300 dpi pixels

Tagged as <Your Name_Design Task Title_Task 3>

In addition to the final design, we also need to write a 200-word design description explaining the following points:

i) Decisions made in the design

ii) The meaning and purpose of the design

iii) The design principles used in the design process

Week 7:

My design, as required, selected the first sketch and refined it with "harmony and unity" as its core concept. The design continues the style of colored pencil doodles and shading on the figure, maintaining consistency in the overall visual elements. The magic lamp, mist, and starlight in the image are connected by soft lines, creating a unified and dreamlike atmosphere. The mist rising from the lamp extends upwards, lifting the girl and guiding the viewer's eye, making the magic lamp the visual focal point of the image.

I consulted some materials:

Reference image: Genie lamp poster

Reference image: Aladdin illustration

At first, I used colored pencils to draw doodles and shading lines on the figures and the picture, but later I found that this style was not quite consistent with the reference picture. So I adjusted the way I presented the picture, laid out the elements of the picture to make the whole more harmonious and easier to create a dreamlike feeling.

The changed screen:

I revised my drawing technique and started using direct tiling.

In terms of color, soft and harmonious tones are used to enhance the dreamlike feel, and the contrast between light and dark highlights the image of the magic lamp and the girl. In terms of composition, the arrangement of elements forms visual guide lines, naturally drawing the eye from the lamp to the girl and enhancing the sense of flow in the image.

1) Decisions Made in the Design

In the final design, I chose the first sketch and decided to retain the style of colored pencil doodles and shading, but laid out the elements to create a more unified and dreamlike overall effect. The magic lamp, mist, and starlight are connected by soft lines; the mist rises from the lamp, lifting the girl and guiding the viewer's eye, making the magic lamp the visual focus. I also deliberately kept the background and details simple to highlight the main character and the lamp, while enhancing the sense of depth and flow in the image.

2) Meaning and Purpose of the Design

This design aims to create a dreamlike and magical atmosphere, allowing the viewer to feel the girl's freedom and fantasy in a fantasy world. The magic lamp symbolizes hope and dreams, while the mist and starlight symbolize the flow of imagination. The entire image not only showcases visual beauty but also guides the viewer's eye through its elements, naturally immersing them in the story scene.

3) Design Principles Used in the Design Process

In the design, I employed harmony and unity to ensure a consistent overall style. Movement was used to guide the eye from the lamp to the girl, emphasizing the visual importance of the magic lamp and the figure. Contrast was used to enhance the light and shadow effects and create a clear distinction between primary and secondary elements. The tiling of elements and the connection of lines also reflected unity and rhythm, giving the image both depth and a dreamlike quality.

Based on the feedback, I revised my design, changing the colors of the girl's clothes to create a stronger contrast.

FEEDBACK

Week 7

That's a good development progress. Your design clearly communicates the fantasy concept through the magic lamp, mist, and starlight elements. The upward movement from the lamp to the girl helps guide the viewer’s eye and creates a sense of visual flow in the composition.

The use of soft colours also helps create harmony and unity in the overall design. However, the focal point could be stronger. Increasing contrast or adjusting the scale of the main elements could help the magic lamp and character stand out more clearly.

Overall, the concept is clear and visually interesting, but further refinement in contrast and visual hierarchy would improve the final design. You've completed the Task 3, you may proceed to Final Compilation. Thanks

REFLECTION

Experience

Overall, Task 3 was a very interesting experience. I enjoyed developing and refining my initial sketches into a complete design. While the initial concept already well captured the dreamy and unified atmosphere, I still gained a lot of inspiration while exploring different colors, compositions, and details, making the image more in line with the fantastical story I wanted to convey.

Observation

In the process of gradually refining the design, I had the opportunity to stop and carefully observe the arrangement and color combinations of each element. This made me realize that soft lines and tiling layouts better create a sense of unity while guiding the viewer's eye to the magic lamp and the girl. I also experimented with adjusting the proportions of the mist and starlight to make the image both fluid and dreamlike, which made me understand the importance of composition and visual guidance even more.

Discovery

I discovered that constantly experimenting with different colors, light and shadow, and details in design can inspire more creativity. Mixing colors and soft transitions created completely different atmospheres and made me realize that design is not just about reproducing ideas, but also a process of continuous exploration and experimentation, which makes me look forward to my future creations.
