Week 4 | Audio Editing Exercise
Our assignment was to dub a silent clip from the movie "The Universe". We had to record dialogue and lay out the sound effects in the clip.
Specific steps are as follows:
Watch the video: First, we need to import the video file in Adobe Premiere Pro and place it on the timeline for viewing. By carefully watching the video, we can understand the content and rhythm of the video, laying the foundation for subsequent audio synchronization.
Record scenes: As we watch the video, we need to record the start and end times of each scene in detail in a spreadsheet. This helped us position each scene precisely so we could add the right sound effects.
List the sound effects: Next, we want to list the required sound effects for each scene. For example, if someone is walking in a scene, we need to record the need to add footsteps. If there is a picture of the door opening, you need to record and add the door opening sound, etc. Make sure that all sound effects in each scene are listed so that they are not missed when later synchronizing the audio.
Synchronize audio: After the spreadsheet recording is completed, we need to import the corresponding sound effects in Adobe Premiere Pro and synchronize them with the video. Adjust the position and length of sound effects to perfectly match the action and imagery in your video. Ensure each sound effect is accurately synchronized with the video content through repeated playback and adjustments.
Week 5 ｜Production
This week’s learning focuses on the five main stages of film production and the key roles within a production team. First, we looked at the different stages of film production, including development, pre-production, production, post-production and distribution. Each stage has its own unique tasks and challenges, from the development of the idea to the final release of the film to audiences.
Roles in the production team
In the second part of this week's exercise we learned more about the roles of the team behind the production, I was surprised that there were so many roles and there are probably many more in advanced filmmaking. An article about the production team is here.
- Producer: Manages the entire production process from start to finish ensuring the film is on time and within budget.
- Director: Responsible for overseeing the creative aspects of a film, including filming and assembly, directing the cast and crew to realize the film's vision.
- Screenwriter: Carefully crafts a script, developing dialogue and sequence of events to ensure the narrative is logical and engaging.
- Production Designer: Plans the visual progression of the film by translating the script into visual form through storyboarding.
- Art Director: Manages a film's physical set-up, including props and set decorations, to enhance the film's authenticity.
- Costume Designer: Designs costumes that reflect a character's personality, status, and film's setting.
- Cinematographer (Director of Photography): Captures the film visually, focusing on lighting and camera work to enhance the film's beauty.
- Editing: Editing and editing shots, deciding which shots to use and how to arrange them to best tell the story.
- Actors: Work closely with the director and crew to bring the characters to life through their performances.
- Music Director: Selects and oversees the integration of music to complement the film's narrative and mood.

We will then sound edit the audio track to match the film clip. In this exercise, we are tasked with synchronizing the provided audio with the video using Adobe Premiere Pro.
Sound effects can come from:
Mission requirements - 10 audio tracks:
- Dialogue: 4 audio tracks (one for each character)
- Hard sound effects: 3 tracks
- Ambient sounds: 3 tracks

To get the boy's voice effect in the audio, I did the following detailed steps:
1. Record the original sound: First, I recorded a sample of my own voice. This is the basis of sound editing, as we need the original audio files for subsequent processing.
2. Import into audio software: Then, I imported the recorded audio files into audio editing software.
3. Apply the Pitch Modulator: Next, I found the Pitch Modulator effect and applied it to the imported audio file. A pitch modulator is a tool that can adjust the pitch of a sound.
4. Adjust the pitch: To make my voice sound like a boy's, I increased the pitch modulator setting by two semitones. Adding two semitones makes the sound slightly higher.
5. Listening and Tweaking: After applying the pitch adjustments, I auditioned the edited voice to make sure it sounded natural and consistent with the boy's vocal characteristics. If the sound sounds unnatural or too distorted, I'll fine-tune the pitch or other audio parameters.

Lowered the bass and treble, increased the mids.

REFLECTION
Through the above courses, we can systematically complete the synchronization tasks of audio and video. This not only improved our team collaboration capabilities but also enhanced our skills in video editing and audio synchronization using Adobe Premiere Pro.
