LECTURES

Project 1: Proposal Development

According to Mr. Mohd's instructions, we were divided into four groups according to different semesters and majors. Each group needed 6 members, and no more than 3 people with the same number. Soon, my friend ZHIWEI and I found the right teammates, they are LIN CHENYI, LI ZEXING, LONG BOJIANG and LU YIHENG. Finally, we formed the fourth group and completed the task of this module in a teamwork way.

Week 1
Mr Mohd launched the topic We Need to Design and Think: Everyday Design.

Week 2
This week, we brainstormed around the theme of daily design and preliminarily determined three research directions: tea culture, lantern culture and vase. According to the division of labor, each team member is responsible for one direction and discusses the significance of the research.
  • Tea culture - Responsible by CHENYI and ZHEXING
  • Lantern culture - Responsible by LINA and BOJIANG
  • Vase - Responsible by ZHIWEI and YIHENG
The second week of lectures was conducted online, and we learned a lot of valuable knowledge from it. In the class on Friday, I specifically asked my instructor Mr. Zeon which of the three directions we selected was more valuable for research, and received very helpful feedback. This makes us more confident in the next research

Week 4
Project 2 : Data Collection Methods
The students are required to collect visual, oral, textual and tactile artefacts that would be part of their research materials for the ideation in Project 1 (proposal). All collected artefacts and materials must be recorded, kept and documented, accompanied by necessary information such as the type of artefact and material, its purpose, its symbolism, its cultural/historical background, and more, depending on the kind of artefact and material.
Some of the methods by which you can collect data:
• Observation study.
• Interview of relevant stakeholders (from the lecture series, you may approach any of the guest speakers for an interview, if you deem their presentation useful for further research).
• Online and/or actual physical material* visual research of the selected area (the people/arts/symbols/architecture/text/calligraphy etc.)

This week is a public holiday, we have no classes, but this week is a good time for our data collection. We have done a lot of things in different division of labor this week, and everyone has different tasks, but they are all for data collection.
In addition, on Friday, Mr.Zeon held a meeting with each of our groups in teams and gave us very specific and detailed feedback and suggestions.

Interview
We found many Malaysian lantern makers online and eventually contacted a handmade lantern shop in Penang. In order to gain a deeper understanding of the craftsmanship and cultural background of traditional lanterns, our team member Lizexing went to the shop alone for an on-site interview.

Our interview questions:
  1. How long have you been making cellophane lanterns?

  2. Does your craft run in the family?

  3. What is the main production process of cellophane lanterns on the market now?

  4. What do you think is the most time-consuming step in the production process?

  5. Are there any special rules when choosing materials? Do you have the best cellophane or bamboo strips?

  6. Do craftsmen refer to traditional patterns or specific meanings when designing lanterns?

  7. What do you think are the classic lantern shapes? Do different shapes mean different things?

  8. What do you think is the biggest difference between modern lanterns and traditional cellophane lanterns?

  9. What is the special significance of cellophane lanterns in Malaysian culture?

Week 5
Data Compilation / Anaysis / Data Collection / Survey From

Within a week, our group conducted a questionnaire survey, focusing on the following two aspects: first, investigating people's understanding of lanterns; second, understanding their views on traditional lanterns and redesigned lanterns.

Survey Tool:
Questionnaire survey is a quantitative research method, mainly used to collect a large number of respondents' feedback information for statistical analysis. We chose Google froms as the collection tool, and Google froms can be easily shared with participants or respondents via links, which allows more people to access the questionnaire and helps improve the reliability of the collected data.

Survey distribution
Links to the survey will be posted via social media, such as Instagram.
Wechat, WhatsApp.
  •  Survey release active period: 2/3/2025 (Sun) - 7/3/2025 (Fri)

Week 7
We re-drafted the lantern and let the teacher choose and make it again:

Draft 1, we saw hanging lanterns in many Chinese restaurants. We searched online for many ways to weave them and chose a method of weaving them in an interlaced way. We used bamboo strips to weave a cylindrical lantern, painted it white, pasted rice paper on it, and painted a new one with red paint after it dried.

For draft 2, we refer to the shape of the sachets in the Tang Dynasty. We first use wire to fix a pentagonal or hexagonal sphere, wrap the outside with white rice paper, draw the pattern on the colored paper, cut it out, and finally stick it on according to each grid.

Draft 3, 1-3 we use fox shape to make lanterns, 4 is a three-dimensional snake surrounding a round light. The round light is made of tissue paper and white glue. 5 is a three-dimensional snake made of white paper. 6 is a tissue paper cut into the shape of a star. Apply white glue and emboss, seal, and wrap the round light after drying to form a three-dimensional shape on the outside.

Draft 4, We referred to the light and shadow of three-dimensional books. Lanterns can also be cut into different shapes of paper and stacked layer by layer to form new light and shadow.

Finally the teacher chose draft three and we started over.

Make lanterns, make videos

We use a combination of traditional craftsmanship and modern design to cut transparent paper into pentagons and cleverly splice them to form a complete spherical structure. We draw patterns on rice paper and paste them on transparent paper, and install light strips inside. Let light and shadow interweave.

Finally, the wire is passed through the lantern to achieve the hand-held effect.

FEEDBACK
Week 3
During the meeting, the lecturer suggested that we need to put the literature on cultural background research in the presentation PPT into the proposal, add the research direction of daily design, and how to integrate lanterns into daily design. Add more visual references to our draft. I can interview the craftsmen who make lanterns later.

Week 4
The research on lanterns in different cultures needs to be more complete, with reference blogs. This week we will start questionnaires and interviews.

Week 5
We have completed the content on the Google Form very well, and we have all the necessary content. However, the content we added to the PPT needs to be simplified, and some pictures can be added to make it more perfect. We need some in-depth research on lanterns. We need to complete the finished picture of the lamp in the last week and meet with the lecturer for presentation.

Week 6
The origin and particularity of weaving
  • Study the historical and cultural background of weaving, understand its origin, development and techniques in different regions.
  • Combined with the information of Project 2, find a weaving method that can be combined with the lantern design, so that it is not just a decoration, but can convey a specific culture or emotion.
How to apply weaving in design
  • Start with a sketch: try different weaving structures and extend unique shapes from basic geometric forms.
  • Three-dimensional weaving makes the work more like a lantern rather than a basket.
  • Study how rattan is combined with paper or other materials to make weaving not only functional but also a highlight.
  • Analyze traditional and modern weaving techniques and refer to handicrafts from different cultures, such as bamboo weaving, rattan weaving, paper weaving, etc.
  • Not only draw the appearance of the finished product, but also show the weaving process, including structural sketches, node connections, material experiments, etc.
  • Study the weaving works of contemporary artists or craftsmen, extract the design methods from them, and integrate them into group creation.
Material experimentation and innovation
  • Paper: Try different processing methods, such as crumpling, folding, cutting, and collage to make it richer in touch and vision.
  • Combination of paper and rattan: Experiment on how to support and interweave paper and rattan to make the whole both light and structural.
Week 7
We need to recreate the look of the lantern.

REFLECTION
In the process of studying "How Lanterns Can Be Integrate into Modern Daily Design", I learned how to continuously improve my ideas in the design process and combine the lecturer's suggestions to make our proposal more complete.

We realized that the comprehensiveness of the research is crucial to the persuasiveness of the proposal. The lecturer's suggestions made me realize that we need to not only analyze the cultural background of lanterns, but also deeply explore its application value in daily design. At the same time, we need to enhance the intuitiveness of the proposal through more "visual references", which makes me understand the importance of images in expressing concepts. In addition, I plan to interview craftsmen later, which will provide more real practical experience for our research.

Through these weeks of study, I have deeply realized the importance of systematic research and feedback. The lecturer's suggestions, the results of user surveys, and the continuous optimization of the team have gradually improved our project. I also learned how to balance traditional and modern elements in the design process and present the design concept in a more intuitive way. This study not only deepened my understanding of lantern culture, but also gave me a clearer thinking on how to combine traditional craftsmanship with modern life.
