Bachelor of Design in Creative Media / Illustration and Visual Narrative

Task 1 : Exercises

1. LECTURES

Week 1

In the first class, the lecturer, Mr. Hafiz Zamri, explained a lot of basic knowledge about visual aspects and illustration in the class, so that we can understand the basic content that needs to be done later. Let's make a pen drawing through a link, so as to train our ability to control the pen.

Week 2

The basic design of character image.

  • What we know about good character designs is that they grab people's attention because they are iconic and stylized differently.
  • The design is simple and the performance makes the audience better remember, but also has a unique nature.

Week 3

n this class, we learned how to make a character design. Mr. Hafiz highlighted three key points in drawing an effective character design, primarily being unique, simple and iconic.

Three principles for good character design
  • Iconic: We can identify people by looking at their outlines
  • Simplicity: Simple design allows users to easily identify characters and understand the concept of characters
  • Uniqueness: Memorable characters leave a lasting impression in the user's mind and often make the character unique

Week 4
Mr. Hafiz taught us how to deepen our shading skills by drawing people rather than pears, taught us how to use texture and apply it to our designs. We followed his tutorial and mainly used the Pen Tool, Compound Paths, and Clipping Masks to complete this exercise. The end result should be textured chiaroscuro and normal chiaroscuro.

Week 2:

Vormator Shapes

The instructor taught us how to download and use ai, and I learned how to use some shortcut keys, control the pen to stroke and fill in color.

After we draw the shape under the guidance of the teacher, we copy the small shape we need, then flip, rotate, intersect, copy and scale the shape, and finally splice the shapes to get the pattern we want, which can be filled and combined with colors.

 I designed 2characters for this exercise :

Role 1:

I gave my character 1, and using the Gradient Tool, I added a gradient effect to the tail. Also added some shadow surfaces.

Select any character I designed and put it into the card, I chose my second character.

In the character I designed, I chose a suitable picture as the background image of the character.

Week 3:

 Light and ShadowsChiaroscuro

About the light and dark coloring design of pear

The teacher guided us to use the pathfinder tool to design and color a pear shape. Use the Pen Tool to outline the pear, then use the Pencil Tool to outline the pear and use the Split Tool to separate it. I ended up making the shaded side of the pear darker than the original pear.

Fig 3.1Coloring of pears

I used a utility knife to divide the pear into 4 pieces, and finally filled in the shadow module.

Fig 3.2 Split of pears

We learned how to use the pencil tool to draw some graphics on the photo, and then divided the graphic blocks to fill them with corresponding colors.

Week 5:

Chiaroscuro human body design

Mr. Hafiz  gave us a character to draw and apply textures to the character.

After watching the video given by the teacher, I learned how to adjust the rotated picture, adjust the gradient, and how to use the shape generation tool.

Fill the background with the same color as the character.

FEEDBACK
Week 1:
General feedback: Bezier curve games can be used to train the use of the Pen Tool.

Week 2:
General feedback: Try collaging people using shapes.

Week 4:
General feedback: Look for contrast between light and dark and learn how to use shadows on the pear, using the Pen Tool to trace the shape reflected in the pear.

Week 5:
General feedback: Use the Pen Tool to outline the character and add color to the character's body.
